What are probiotics?

The human intestine naturally houses a variety of different bacteria. Probiotics are the “good” bacteria that can be used to help change and repopulate gut flora. These live cultures can be used to boost immunity and overall health, especially gastrointestinal health.

Probiotics can help regulate gut function and prevent stomach upset and diarrhea. These “good” bacteria can also aid in the management of certain health conditions including Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, vaginal infections and UTIs.

What are good dietary sources of probiotics?

Some of the best food sources for good bacteria that can help improve gut health include:

  • Yogurt
  • Kefir products
  • Aged cheeses
  • Kimchi
  • Sauerkraut
  • Miso
  • Tempeh
  • Kombucha
  • Cultured non-dairy yogurts
  • Probiotic supplements which contain live cultures
